Guns For Cash and Bail Reform Reports
The latest Guns For Cash program took in 120 weapons in exchange for cash as part of a one-day program in Asbury Park on Saturday, Monmouth County Prosecutor Christopher J. Gramiccioni announced in a written statement.
The firearms collection paid $7,025 for two assault weapons, 49 rifles and shotguns, and 48 handguns, including 14 semi-automatic handguns, and other items, officials said.
The gun buyback program allows anonymous surrender and asks no questions regarding one’s identity or how the came to possess the weapon. Officials said all guns are checked against a national database to ensure they are not stolen before their destruction.
The Prosecutor’s Office also released a Bail Reform and Speedy Trial Act report.
The Act took effect on Jan 1, thereby shifting from the monetary bail system to one that is risk-based. Those charged with a crime are now assessed on whether they are a danger to the community or a flight risk.
Under the new system there have been 3,315 complaint warrants issued countywide on 2,383 defendants from Jan 1 to Sept. 30.
There were 3,661 charges that were placed on summonses rather than complaint warrant during the same timeframe.
The Prosecutor’s Office filed for detention on 489 defendants and 225 were detained by the court.
To date, 30 defendants were released with conditions after the Prosecutor’s Office agreed to withdraw motions to detain.
There were 198 defendants released on pretrial conditions over the Prosecutor’s Office objection.
And, at this time, 55 defendants have had violations of conditions filed against them, which could result in pretrial detention or increased pretrial release conditions at a later court date, officials said.
The next statistical release will be available in early January when we will offer a full year’s accounting of the new reform measures in Monmouth County.
Just this week, the Ocean Township Police Department reported that a Toms River man they charged with burglary, theft, and possession of burglary tools for the Sept. 26 break in at The Greek Spot on Route 35 was at it again.
Initially remanded to Monmouth County Jail, pending a first appearance, Kevin Soloman, 29, was released from custody at 7:30 p.m. By 9:23 a.m. Friday someone fitting his description, burglarized The Greek Spot once again.
Detectives located Soloman in Neptune Township and charged him with burglary, theft, criminal mischief, possession of burglary tools, possession of heroin, drug paraphernalia and syringes. He was arrested for an outstanding Asbury Park Police Department warrant, and remanded to Monmouth County Jail, where he awaited a new court appearance.
