Future Readers of Asbury Park March On Literacy
District’s Elementary Students Walking Trip Results In Library Cards
During a special walking class trip, over 220 Asbury Park elementary students obtained their library cards, setting them up to become future readers.
The March on Literacy, an idea sparked by Thurgood Marshall Elementary School Principal Thea M. Jackson-Byers, was created as part of a ‘Recharting Our Students Journey Towards Academic Success’ campaign.
Assistant Library Director Kathleen Melgar said this was a first for the Asbury Avenue public library.
“It was the first time an entire school received library cards,” she said.
The two day event served as an introduction to the library’s 16th Annual Summer Reading Club – being held from July 9 to Aug 3, as well as its Libraries Rock program – an array of family friendly events launching on June 25.
Children entering K thru 5th grades are eligible for the reading, crafts, storytime, nature program and pizza party program running 1 p.m. Monday through Friday in the Junior Library, located at the Grand Avenue entrance. The first 50 to register will receive a special giveaway, and the students can earn participation tickets for raffle prizes, which include two $50 gift certificates.
