Georgie’s bar manager found dead in apartment Tuesday
Cause of death unknown at this time
Charles Gurrera, long-time manager of Georgie’s Bar, was found dead in his apartment Tuesday, Asbury Park Police Deputy Chief Anthony Salerno has confirmed.
At 2 p.m. on Aug. 19 Asbury Park police and fire departments responded to a call they received alerting them to an unconscious person where they found Gurrera in his apartment, located above the bar at 810 Fifth Avenue, according to Garrett Giberson, spokesman for the Asbury Park Fire Department.
He was 36, Salerno said.
Gurrera’s cause of death is pending results from an autopsy and toxicological tests, Salerno said.
Gurrera’s Facebook page lists him as having worked at Georgies since 2005. The bar caters to the gay community.
Giberson, who knew Gurrera before he became manager of Georgie’s, lauded his service to the gay community in Asbury Park.
“He was a great guy in the gay community, he did a great job managing Georgie’s,” Gibserson said. “I can’t tell you how many benefits Georgie’s hosted because of Charlie. He was just all about doing good things for the gay community in Asbury Park.”
Georgie’s will be closed for the remainder of Tuesday out of respect and mourning, according to their Facebook page. The bar will reopen on Wednesday at 2 m.
[Correction: Initial reports said Gurrera was 37 years old at his time of death. Police have confirmed he was 36. This article has been updated to reflect Gurrera’s true age.]
