Glamping, Skate bowl, and retail planned for Carousel
Plans need City Council and Planning Board approval
Boardwalk redeveloper Madison Marquette has proposed a skate board park/glamping tent hotel for the city’s iconic Carousel building.
Set to be a temporary home for the AP Skateboard Foundation, a skate bowl will be placed inside the Carousel and paired with a lounge area, Senior Vice President Anselm Fusco said during Wednesday afternoon’s Technical Review Committee [TRC] meeting.
The TRC is a sub committee comprised of Planning Board members. It vets redevelopment site plan applications before they move on to the City Council, who acts as the redevelopment authority. If cleared by the City Council, a plan then moves on to the Planning Board.
The Carousel plans also call for two pop up retail containers that would abut the building’s north entrances. They would use shipping containers similar to the boardwalk pop ups to house the skate culture wares. The containers would be affixed with a mural, Fusco said.
Adjacent to the building will be a set of glamping tents, administered by Nomad, a local tent rental company who are also vendors at The Market inside Convention Hall.
The portmanteau of glamour and camping brings boutique hotel like amenities to the traditional outdoor experience.
Fusco said picnic tables, a snack trailer inside a vintage camper, use of a set of beach lockers and a port-a-johns would be installed to accommodate the seasonal camping hotel that feature a view of Wesley Lake.
TRC Chair Sara Anne Towery suggested switching the Nomad tent hotel location with the shipping container retail pop up in order to provide a more pleasing view for passersby.
But Fusco said that could considerably change the plan’s internal circulation and alignment. He did agree to vet the committee’s suggestions prior to coming before the full Planning Board.
