GOP incumbents Angelini and Casagrande defeated
Democrats Houghtaling and Downey win tight race in unofficial results
In a major upset, 11th District Democratic Assembly candidates Eric Houghtaling and JoAnn Downey defeated Republican incumbents Mary Pat Angelini and Caroline Casagrande, according to unofficial results posted on the website of the Monmouth County Clerk.
The margin of victory was only 165 votes over Angelini. Casagrande was behind by 389 votes. A total of 53,606 votes were cast in the race. The tallies do not include provisional ballots.
Houghtaling is currently Mayor of Neptune and Downey is an attorney from Freehold.
Houghtaling was the high vote getter with 13,727 votes followed by Downey with 13,452 votes. Angelini had 13,287 votes followed by Casagrande with 13,063 votes.

Republican Jennifer Beck currently represents the district in the state Senate. She was not up for reelection this year as Beck is in the middle of a four-year term. The Assembly term is every two years.
The 11th District includes Asbury Park, Neptune, Ocean Township, Loch Arbour, Interlaken, Allenhurst and Deal. It extends north to Long Branch and as far west as Freehold Borough and Freehold Township.
The other municipalities in the 11th District are Colts Neck, Eatontown, Neptune City, Ocean Township, Red Bank, Shrewsbury Borough, Shrewsbury Township, Tinton Falls and West Long Branch.
