Gun buyback scheduled for Asbury Park, Rumson
County residents can surrender weapons, get cash anonymously
Two gun buyback programs will take place in Monmouth County Friday and Saturday, one in Asbury Park and one in Rumson.
On Friday, Sept. 20 and Saturday, Sept. 21 Monmouth county residents can anonymously surrender weapons as part of the countywide program.
“No questions asked and get cash back — that is the philosophy behind our gun buyback program,” Acting Monmouth County Prosecutor Christopher J. Gramiccioni said in a prepared release.
Any county resident can surrender weapons without fear of having to answer questions about their identity or how they came into possession of any weapon, the release said.
“Residents can bring in weapons to either of the two locations we have established without fear of getting in trouble,” Gramiccioni said.
Cash will be paid for the surrender of assault weapons ($200), handguns ($100), shotguns and rifles ($25), according to the release. Ammunition, pellet guns and BB guns may also be surrendered but will not yield any compensation.
The Asbury gun buyback program takes place at Shiloh Community Fellowship Church, 142 Dewitt Ave., Asbury Park from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. both days. The Rumson program will be held at Police Department, 80 East River Rd. at the same times. All weapons should be unloaded and transported safely, in accordance with the law.
During the two-day buyback program held at Asbury Park and Keansburg locations in March, county residents turned in a total of 1,581 guns [shown above and at right], 15 were assault weapons.
The programs are sponsored by the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office, Monmouth County Board of Chosen Freeholders, Monmouth County Sheriff’s Office and the Monmouth County Police Chiefs’ Association.
