Help-Portrait Asbury Park Set For Saturday
Event benefits Mary’s Place and Mya Lin Terry Foundation
The International Help-Portrait movement comes to Asbury Park Saturday.
Created in 2009, Help-Portrait works to spotlight those in need through portraits organized by photographers, make-up artists, hair stylists, and other volunteers on the first Saturday in December.
This year, Help Portrait Asbury Park will be hosted from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. by Salt Studios at 658 Cookman Ave inside the Shoppes at the Arcade.
The event will work with Mya Lin Terry Foundation and Mary’s Place by the Sea in Ocean Grove.
The Mya Lin Terry Foundation honors the memory of grade-schooler Mya Lin Terry who lost her 5½ year battle with Leukemia on April 10, 2013. The Foundation works to enrich the lives of pediatric cancer patients.
Mary’s Place, a block from the waterfront, offers women with cancer a free retreat for a one to three day stay.
This year over 25 volunteers will provide professional hair, makeup, and photography services for the professional portraits, owner Rob Newman said.
“We are providing the professional services for families that cannot afford them,” Newman said. “We want them to get the royal treatment.”
Salt, which opened March 1, 2014, is a 1,800-square-foot rentable commercial photography space that also offers educational seminars and events.
Help-Portrait was founded by celebrity photographer Jeremy Cowart in 2009 as a way to help bring a smile, laugh and return dignity to those who need it the most. Help-Portrait’s global movement is spread across 67 countries. In the last seven years, 73,241 photographers and volunteers have given more than 370,825 portraits via 2,803 events.
