High school students strut their stuff at fashion event
'We put a lot of work into it and had a lot of fun doing it'
Asbury Park High School students showed off this year’s prom fashions at a winter fashion show held at the Berkeley Hotel Wednesday.
“We put a lot of work into it,” said senior Siana Portlock. “It ended up being a lot of fun, you feel like a superstar.”
At the all-student produced fashion show, dubbed “A Night on the Stars,” students modeled formal and prom fashions from Castle Couture, Jos. A. Bank and jewelry provided by Asbury Park’s Heaven and Art Antiques.
Besides modeling the clothes, the students also handled press relations, marketing, music mixing, photography, modeling, networking, social media promotion and favors. Instead of charging an admission fee, the students accepted a non-perishable food item as the price of admission and will donate the collection to the Mercy Center in Asbury Park.

The completely student produced event was supervised by Jean Johnson, fashion and art instructor at the high school. It was Johnson’s goal to have students learn and participate in the business of what it took to coordinate a professional fashion show.
By the end of the show, Johnson was very pleased with the students’ efforts and the support of all those who came out.
“We value the community support,” said Johnson. “It was a wonderful experience for them and build their confidence — this was their show.”
Several stores in town made contributions to the “swag bags” given away to attendants. Former Mayor Ed Johnson served as the master of ceremonies and council members John Loffredo and Amy Quinn also made it out to see the show, along with Asbury Park Board of Education member Christian Hall.
“Ms. Johnson and the students did a really great job,” said Hall. “I”m looking forward to more events like this. Who ever didn’t come missed out.”
“To have the privilege of doing this was great,” said junior Lisa Miranda.
Asbury Park High School Principal Reginald Mirthil, who handed out a carnation to all of the female models as they exited the runway, said this was the second year in a row the students held a successful fashion show.
“The staff and the students worked so well to make all of this possible,” said APHS Principal Reginald Mirthil. ‘I’m very proud of them.”
“We put a lot of work into it and had a lot of fun doing it,” said senior Brian Miranda. “You know what they say — work hard, play hard.”
