Improvements on track at city’s dog beach
New designated fenced area expected this week
Improvements are expected to be complete this week to the Eighth Avenue dog beach also known as a popular fishing and surfing area.
The changes came after close to 100 petitioners asked the City Council to clean up the north beach area where dogs are allowed free reign from 6 p.m. to 8:30 a.m. during the summer season.
“It’s not that I want to get rid of it, I just simply want to share it,” Asbury Towers resident Joyce Grant said. “I feel it needs it to be shared so children can play in not urine soaked sand.”
The petitioners asked that a more limited fenced area be designated for the animals, garbage cans, better law enforcement presence and beach cleaning.
“This is the third year I’m speaking about this,” Asbury Towers resident Michelle Rachelson. “There just isn’t enough being done. It’s gotten to the point where people don’t even call it a fisherman’s beach, the surfing beach or a bathing beach – it’s a dog beach.”
The petition asked for a centering of the area dogs are allowed to run unleashed.
Acting City Manager Anthony Nuccio said changes and improvements are expected to be completed this week.
“So far additional trash cans have been placed on the beach and there will be an increase of [law] enforcement,” Nuccio said. “A snow fence is going to be erected around the perimeter and signs have been ordered that will read – no dogs beyond this point.”
Dogs are allowed on the beach and along the boardwalk all day from September 15 through May 15. All dogs must be licensed.
