Intoxicated city man involved in hit and run faces drug charges
Man was also driving with a suspended license
A 22-year-old city man was arrested after he allegedly crashed a car into a utility pole in Wanamassa while driving under the influence and fled the scene shortly thereafter, according to police.
On Thursday September 4, 2014 at approximately 12:07 a.m., Ocean Township police responded to a motor vehicle crash on Sunset Avenue at the intersection of Stewart Avenue where a sports utility vehicle struck a utility pole and left the scene. Witnesses at the scene told police they saw the vehicle head toward Asbury Park, the release stated.
Vehicle parts located at the scene of the crash matched a 2003 Ford Explorer being operated by Asbury Park resident Edgar Chavez.
Further investigations revealed Chavez had operated the vehicle while under the influence of alcohol on a suspended license, the release said. Chavez was also found with less than 50g of marijuana in his possession, according to the release.
Chavez was charged with driving while intoxicated, leaving the scene of an accident, failing to report an accident, possession of CDS [marijuana under 50g], possession of drug paraphernalia, operating a vehicle while having a suspended license, the release said. Several other motor vehicle violation summonses were issued to Chavez, who was released on a complaint summonses to appear at a future court hearing.
Chavez was uninjured during the collision and the utility pole required replacement.
