Intoxicated driver hits moving police car at 2 a.m., cops say
Officer now out on medical leave
A 21-year-old motorist is being charged with driving while intoxicated and leaving the scene of an accident following a crash that took place at 2:15 a.m. on April 12, Asbury Park Police Captain Anthony Salerno said.
The crash occurred in the 1000 block of Bangs Avenue, between Langford and Comstock streets, Salerno said. The motorist crashed into a moving police car, Salerno said, as well as a few parked vehicles.
The police officer driving the patrol car, Craig Breiner, was on the way to another call, Salerno said. He sustained a serious but non-life-threatening injury and was taken to Jersey Shore University Medical Center, where he was admitted for a short-term stay, Salerno said. He is now out on medical leave.
“He was going the standard speed limit and had his overhead emergency lights on,” Salerno said.
After that, the motorist left the scene of the accident, Salerno said. Sgt. Carmen Gagliano, Officer Joel Fiori and members of the Monmouth County Serious Crash Accident Response Team [SCART] located Kristen Smith, 21, of Eatontown, and her car, Salerno said. Smith was taken to Jersey Shore University Medical Center to be examined, Salerno said.
Smith is being charged with aggravated assault, leaving the scene of a crime, driving while intoxicated and reckless driving, as well as additional motor vehicle summonses, connected to the incident, Salerno said.
