John Waters headlines at House of Independents
Tickets for Dec. 7 show now on sale
Filmmaker, actor, photographer, raconteur, and author John Waters is bringing his one-man show “A John Waters Christmas: Holier and Dirtier” to the House of Independents on Dec. 7.
Located on Cookman Avenue, the House of Independents brings together a mix of theatre, dance, film, comedy, oddities, late night fare, and of course music. Its grand opening takes place 7 p.m. Tuesday.
According to show organizers, Waters, “like a wayward savior for the Christmas damaged hitchhikes into town with a bag full of sticks and stones spreading yuletide cheer and lunacy.”
Born in Baltimore, Waters was drawn to exploitative movies at a young age. His first film, an 8-mm short titled “Hag in a Black Leather Jacket” was produced in 1964. He continued to experiment throughout the 1960s.
He has described his 1970 “Multiple Maniacs,” as his first celluloid atrocity. The film featured 300 pound transvestite Lady Divine as the proprietor of a freak show that lures unsuspecting suburbanites into ‘the Cavalcade of Perversions.’
Waters went on to create such cult favorites as “Pink Flamingos,” “Hairspray,” “Serial Mom,” “Pecker,” “Cecil B. Demented,” and “A Dirty Shame.”
He is the author of seven books. With his bestseller Carsick, the reader joins in Waters subversive humor as he hitchhikes from Baltimore to San Francisco.
With A John Waters Christmas, he is torn between capitalism and anarchy, feeling ‘Christmas crazy’ and as always ‘needy, greedy, horny for presents, and filled with an unnatural desire to please,’ according to organizers. His rapid-fire Xmas massacre monologue asks the questions: ‘Is Santa erotic?’ and ‘Are the holidays a better time for criminals?’
But do be warned, the show contains explicit and potentially controversial content.
In exploring his fanatical love of dangerous gift toys for children and the horror of ‘living’ Nativity scenes, Waters delves into his hatred of holiday gift cards, fruit baskets and the Easter Bunny.
Tickets for the 8 p.m. Dec. 7 show are $40, available on the House of Independents website. Doors open at 7 p.m.
