June event will showcase city’s summer youth programs
'The more youth are involved in activities the less they will get in trouble'
With summer on the way, two of the city’s anti-violence initiatives are teaming up to get the word out to Asbury Park residents about what summer programs are being offered to the city’s youth.
On Saturday, June 14, the Community Development Initiative and Asbury Park Community Action Network [AP CAN] will jointly host “Super Safe Summer,” Asbury Park Mayor Myra Campbell announced at Saturday’s AP CAN meeting.
Super Safe Summer is a roll out of all the summer programs available to the city’s youth. Representatives from the Asbury Park recreation department, Prevention First, the Mercy Center and other groups will be on hand to explain their summer program offerings.
“We are trying to bring in as many organizations that offer activities to youth so that parents know there are things to do in Asbury Park, and this is where you can go,” Campbell said.
Some programs will be free and others will have a cost, she said.
“You can’t make people get involved,” she said. “You can let them know, this is what is available for you, and the more youth are involved in activities the less they will get in trouble,” she said.
As the event is still in the preliminary planning stage, the time of the event, a specific location to hold it and other details are still being worked out, she said.
