Justice Allah disqualified from Asbury council race
Not enough valid signatures on nominating petition
An independent candidate who filed to run in the city council election was disqualified today, and his name will not appear on the ballot, according to city clerk Steven Kay.
Justice Allah, 32, submitted 93 signatures on his nominating petition to run in the May 14 nonpartisan election. Eighty-five signatures of registered voters in Asbury Park are required, Kay said.
Upon reviewing the signatures, Kay found that only 56 were registered voters in the city. That left Allah, who resides at 220 Fourth Ave., 29 signatures short.
The candidate was notified of the deficiency today.
“At this point, he’s disqualified,” Kay said.
That leaves 22 candidates who filed to run by the Monday deadline. Four tickets of five candidates each have filed. Two independents remain in the race.
The current council members’ terms expire on June 30. New four-year terms begin July 1.
