Kaya’s Kitchen vegan cafe to open in Lakehouse building
Late January opening planned for Belmar eatery's second location
Asbury Park is about to get its own vegan eatery.
Kaya’s Kitchen, a popular vegan restaurant for 15 years in Belmar, will open a second location in the café space at the Lakehouse building on Lake Avenue.
A late January opening is expected, according to Kaya’s owner Omer Basatemur. It will be known as Kaya’s Kitchen vegan café.
Expect breakfast and lunch selections, as well as vegan baked goods. There is seating inside at the café, and Basatemur says he intends to use the outdoor area for additional seating in the warm weather.
“I’ve always looked to open more places down the line to expand ties,” said Basatemur. “It’s been 15 years now. Asbury Park obviously is a great place with a vibe going on that’s in line with what we do. I feel like there’s a need for it.”
The Kaya’s Asbury café will “be a little different” than what’s done at Kaya’s Kitchen in Belmar, he said. “Asbury Park will be a quicker place, a where you can eat every day type of spot.”
Offerings to take out or eat in will include tofu scrambles, a vegan pork roll, egg and cheese sandwich and breakfast burritos, as well as lots of lunch sandwiches, soup, baked goods like donuts and crumb cake and coffee by Asbury Roastery. Grab and go drinks too.
Basatemur says Kaya’s Kitchen vegan café plans to be open from 8 am to 7 pm seven days a week, although the weekend hours may end up a bit different depending on the demand.
“This is an industry that I take pride in being a part of,” says Basatemur, 40. “I feel like I’m doing whatever I can, my part, to try to make the world a little bit better in your own way, by doing it through your every day action in your own work. It makes me be able to be an activist behind the scenes by doing what I do. It’s a good feeling to be able to work in that type of environment every day.”
