King’s Daughter Returns to Asbury Park Sept. 3
Rev. Dr. Bernice King Moving Forward Together Guest Speaker
The Asbury Park Community Action Network [APCAN] has announced the return of Rev. Dr Bernice King, the youngest child of civil rights leader Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Coretta Scott King.
In January, Rev. Dr. Bernice King was the keynote speaker during the annual Black History Month Extravaganza.
On Sept. 3, she will return as the guest speaker for St. Stephen AME Zion’s Moving Forward Together Ecumencial Service, led by Rev. Derinzer Johnson.
King’s visit is sponsored by APCAN, an all-volunteer group founded by Johnson and retired Asbury Park Police Lt. George Corbin. The grassroots initiative seeks to address the underlying cause of violence in the city, outlined as: health, law enforcement, jobs, housing and education and family services.
King, an ordained minister and attorney, is the Chief Executive Officer of The King Center, founded by her mother in 1968. She began her oratory career at age of 17 when she spoke in her mother’s stead at the United Nations.
King holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology from Spelman College, a Masters of Divinity and Doctorate of Law Degrees from Emory University, and an honorary Doctorate of Divinity degree from Wesley College.
She founded ‘Be A King’ with a focus on inspiring individuals to “Think, Act, Live, and Lead,” according to her website.
The 6 p.m. Sept. 3 Ecumenical Service will feature showcases by the church’s Mime Ministry, Community Choir, Youth Spoken Word, and Praise Dancers.
