Kula Café to mark year anniversary on Springwood Ave.
Blues band Al Holmes & the Tribe return to perform
One week from today, the Kula Café will celebrate its first anniversary operating out of Asbury Park’s Springwood Center.
Anniversary festivities include an open house featuring top New Jersey jazzmen from 4 to 6 p.m. followed by the spring start-up of Thursday night live blues from 7 to 10 p.m, according to a news release from café owners Interfaith Neighbors.
Musicians Mark Cohn on keyboards, Jimmy Givens on drums, Dorian Parreott on saxophone and vocals, and Mark Chernoff on saxophone will provide the open house entertainment.
In the evening, Al Holmes and the Tribe [shown at right], who brought blues back to Springwood Avenue last year, return to the café.
Chef Wendy Escobedo [shown above] will feature a Cajun menu. There is a $5 donation for the evening entertainment.
Interfaith Neighbors, which owns and operates the Kula Café, opened the breakfast and lunch venue in April 2013 as part of a 16-week training program for young people who may have faced significant employment barriers to get jobs in the shore hospitality industry.
The café has stood front and center in the ongoing revitalization of Asbury Park’s West Side.
Interfaith Neighbors recently announced a second economic initiative to be created on land adjacent to the café – the Kula Urban Farm enterprise selling plants, vegetables and leafy greens for profit with a portion of the farm to be used as a community entrepreneurial garden.
The Kula Café is located at 1201 Springwood Ave. Hours of operation are 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday.
