League Of Women Voters Joins Save The Tower Campaign
20th Century Stucile Farms Landmark To Be Used As Homage To Community's Farming History
Restoring the early 20th century Stucile Farms water tank holder is at the center of the “Save The Tower” campaign by the Ocean Township Historical Museum.
The historical group is most known for successfully moving its headquarters, the 18th Century Eden Woolley House, from the corner of Route 35 and Deal Road and renovating its oldest sections before opening to the public in 2009.
They hope to do the same for the water tower, which sits adjacent to the Woolley House at 703 Deal Road. To date, the structure, boasting a façade reminiscent of a New England lighthouse, has been stabilized and painted. They all volunteer group hopes to refurbish the tower as an homage to the community’s farming history.
To that end, a Save The Tower fundraising flea market is scheduled for 9 a.m to 3 p.m. Oct 8, at the museum grounds.
On Wednesday the Ocean Township League of Women Voters announced it will join the fundraising effort.
“We are serving many goals in this effort,” said League of Women Voters member Sally Madden. “We will raise money to fund our extensive voter service efforts this election season; to support the flea market shoppers by registering them to vote and making them aware of [our] upcoming debates; and contributing to the museum’s efforts to save the historic tower.”
The local League of Women Voters is collecting antiques and vintage items to sell at their booth during the fundraising event.
Event Chair Brenda Wityk said they are working to create a fun and productive event for everyone involved.
“It’s an ideal location for what we have in mind: parkland situated behind the museum and next to the library with off-street parking, activities for children, tours of the museum and tower, and a surrounding woodland that will be alive with fall colors,” she said.
Vendor applications [downloadable via oceanmuseum.com] will be accepted through Friday from food, organizations and individuals offering antiques, arts and crafts, and vintage, re-purposed home décor, and other flea market items. All proceeds from the market go to the tower restoration effort.
The League of Women Voters is a nonpartisan organization that works to protect, educate, and engage voters on a range of public interest issues. Their election season sponsored debates will include:
Two gubernatorial debates, slated for 7 p.m. Oct 10 and 18 on ABC-TV
An 11th District Senate and Assembly candidate forum, slated for 7 p.m. Oct. 16 at Monmouth University.
A Monmouth County Freeholder candidate Forum, slated for 7 p.m. Oct. 24 at Monmouth County Library Headquarters, 125 Symmes Dr in Manalapan.
And, the Ocean Township Board of Education candidate forum, slated for 7 p.m. Oct. 19 at the Board Offices, located at 163 Monmouth Rd. in Oakhurst.
