Lights! Camera! Politics! – the political themed screening of classic films returns Feb. 3 at The Stephen Crane House on Fourth Avenue in Asbury Park.
Empowerment is the focus of this round of films, series creator Ed Johnson [at right] said.
“Three classic films featuring stories of individuals who embraced empowerment through action will be shown,” the former mayor said.
First up will be Norma Rae, starring Sally Field in her 1979 Academy Award-winning performance as a small town textile factory worker who takes a stand against poor health and safety conditions in the workplace, Johnson said. Guest presenter for the Feb 3 event will be Jackeline Mejias Fuertes, director of America’s SBDC and founding sponsor of the annual Women Entrepreneurs Rock.
The Landlord, starring Beau Bridges, will be screened on March 3. The 1970 Academy Award & Golden Globe-nominated film is about a young man who seeks independence by running away from home to the Park Slope section of Brooklyn, Johnson said. Not only does he find independence, but empowerment by embracing a neighborhood, people and cultures far different than his own. The screening guest presenter will be Jennifer Murphy, executive director of HomeSmart NY, a community development and housing professional.
The series wraps up on April 7 with the screening of Mildred Pierce, the starring Joan Crawford in her 1945 Academy Award-winning performance as an ‘All American Wife & Mother’ who is dealt more than her fair share of challenges, but with an intense sense of ambition and entrepreneurship plays that hand into success…and beyond, Johnson said. Marilyn Schlossbach, executive chef and restaurateur will be the guest presenter. She is an environmentalist and humanitarian who believes in working to help empower our youth to realize their full potential, Johnson said.
Each Lights! Camera! Action! screening begins at 3 p.m. and features a post screening reception at The Stephen Crane House, located at 508 Fourth Avenue in Asbury Park. The series is apart of the Ed Johnson AP Classic Politics project. Admission is free and donations in support of the Asbury Park Little League will be accepted.
