Lights! Camera! Politics! Returns To Stephen Crane House
Fall Film Series spotlights historical movements that influenced politics
The Fifth season of Lights! Camera! Politics! film Series kicks off next month at the historic Stephen Crane House, located on Fourth Avenue.
This time around, the monthly fall series is themed “The Revolution: People, Power & Politics,” said former Mayor Ed Johnson, who created the series. Each film focuses on historical movements that influenced politics and the balance of power.
The first film “Viva Zapata,” stars Marlon Brando and Anthony Quinn in a story of challenges following the Mexican revolution.
The second screening will be “Pride,” starring Bill Nighy and Imelda Staunton, in this look at London’s LGBTQ community coming to the aid of striking Welsh coal miners battling the Thatcher government.
The season finale will be “The Black Book” [aka Reign of Terror], starring Robert Cummings and Norman Lloyd, in this spotlight of government by mob rule, finger pointing and accusations during the French Revolution.
Each screening is presented by a Special Guest who provides backstory, relevant historical production information and cinematic commentary. There is also a post-screening mingle, allowing moviegoers to share impressions and observations, Johnson said.
Screenings will be at 3 p.m. Oct 7, Nov 4, and Dec. 2, at The Stephen Crane House, located at 508 Fourth Avenue. Admission is free and donations to the AP Little League and the Asbury Park Toy Drive will be collected.
The series is a part of Johnson’s Classic Politics project, which aims to provides thought provoking seminars, courses and events that examine the role and impact of politics in society. The film programming is owned and maintained by the Asbury Park Historical Society, headquartered in the Stephen Crane House.
