Local Man arrested for heroin possession
Despite Release on Charges, Remitted to County Jail for Warrant Default
Eric Stein, 28, of Ocean, was charged with heroin possession as well as possession of a hypodermic syringe and drug paraphernalia, after police stopped to offer aid close to 6 p.m. Monday near Monmouth Road and Lake Avenue, according to a news release from Det. Lt. Timothy R. Torchia of the Ocean Township Police Department.
From the release:
On July 11th at approximately 6:00 p.m. Sergeants Matthew Jackiewicz and Gregory Schenck were traveling north on Monmouth Road. As they approached the intersection of Lake Avenue they observed a Volvo stopped in traffic. They also noticed that the driver was slumped over and appeared to be unconscious.
Jackiewicz stopped to render aid and found the driver to be unresponsive to his commands. As he continued to make observations he noticed the vehicle was still in drive and the driver had his foot on the brake.
Jackiewicz was able to place the vehicle into park and noticed an uncapped hypodermic syringe on the driver’s lap. At this point additional officers arrived on scene to assist with the investigation.
Stein, who was charged with driving under the influence of drugs, also had a warrant for his arrest.
He was placed under arrest and transported by Oakhurst EMS to Jersey Shore University Medical Center for an evaluation. Once cleared from the hospital, Officer David Marino transported Stein back to the headquarters for processing.
Although Stein was to be released on his own recognizance for this incident, he was remitted to Monmouth County Jail for defaulting on the $1,0000 warrant.
Officers Casey Larrison and Ryan Vaccaro also assisted.
