A Long Branch resident who nearly hit a police car while driving near the Asbury Park traffic circle was charged with weapons possession after police say they found a machete in his car.

Vincent K. Johnston-Haughton, 21, was found with a “machete type knife” next to the center console of the car he was driving after he failed to yield at an intersection, nearly colliding with Ocean Township Police Officer Kyle Kane’s vehicle, according to a release from the department.

Kane observed the knife while speaking with Johnston-Haughton during the stop, the release said.

The incident took place minutes before midnight on Friday, Sept. 19.

Johnson-Haughton was charged one count of unlawful possession of a weapon and careless driving.

He was released on complaint summonses to appear at a future court hearing.
