LuLu’s looking for best Asbury Park Guy
Smartphone app offering $500 to top-rate guy in the city
Matchmaking app Lulu is kicking up activity in Asbury Park with its five-day End of Summer competition.
From Wednesday through Sunday, women can log on to rate men throughout city by using ‘fun and cheeky’ hashtags like #EpicSmile, #KissableLips, or #OneTrackMind, Marketing Manager Taylor McPherson said.
The guy who receives the most reviews will win $500.
“We’re hoping to drive interaction between men and women in town by creating a fun way for people to mix and mingle,” said Marketing Manager Taylor McPherson.
Created by women for women, the smartphone app uses contacts to create a database.
The now global site launched in 2013 predominately for college age students but today has grown to include more than 6 million users, ages 21 to 28 on average, McPherson said.
Controversy over its rating system has included comments of a double standard, calling it ‘Yelp for Men’ or Facebook meets Sex in the City.
But McPherson said it’s a safe way for women to intelligently do their research.
“There’s a certain conversation that happens when there is only women in the room, especially when it’s only about men,” she said. “This is safer for women overall because it helps women do their research so they can know as much as they can about a guy. It helps stop internet bullying, it helps stop slander but it lets women know what they are getting into.”
The premise is simple. After downloading the app, a women can fill out a multiple choice review of the men she knows. Men are only able to log on to view their ratings based on the anonymous reviews by women.
“Lulu scores men on seven different categories including; ambition, humor, commitment, looks, style, kissing and sex,” McPherson said.
