After a few design renditions, boardwalk redeveloper Madison Marquette’s First Avenue Pavilion Art Wall project obtained its final approval Monday night from the Planning Board.
The art wall is located on the Ocean Avenue front of the building that houses Stella Marina, Cubacan, Watermark, and Just Another Day’s Ice Cream Shop.
Madison Marquette’s Director of Retail Carrie Turner said the final design [shown above] is inspired by a vintage 1700’s-era Library of Congress map of the New Jersey coastline.
Artists Mel Stultz and Larry Potter of Landmark Studios will create a backlit compass rose sculpture, with more painted radial lines atop the centered map denoting Asbury Park with a blue dot light.
“This shift will allow more context with Asbury Park’s proximity to New York and brings better balance to the image,” Turner said.
Gone is what Planning Board Chairman Herb Fehrenback referred to as the façade’s Dead Sea color [at right] that exists today. Instead the map will feature two parchment inspired hues to distinguish between land and sea.
Other changes include the addition of a border, a legend and a small plaque explaining the image’s inspiration, and additional lighting along the roof line.
The design project, which received conceptual plan approval in May 2013, is expected to be completed by the July 4 weekend, Turner said.
