A 20-year-old man turned a gun on himself after shooting a 30-year-old male victim Thursday afternoon at a residence near Our Lady of Mt. Carmel, according to a Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office news release.

Both men, residents of Asbury Park, remain in critical condition at an area hospital, Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office spokesman Charles Webster said.

The incident began near 12:37 p.m. when an Asbury Park Police Officer, working a construction detail along Asbury Avenue, was flagged down by the gun shot victim.

“The officer radioed for first aid and alerted other officers about the shooting,” Webster said. “Officers quickly identified 1230 First Avenue, Asbury Park as the location of the shooting.”

Officers from the Asbury Park Police Department and the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office, including Acting Prosecutor Christopher Gramiccioni, immediately responded to scene.

“[They] observed a 20-year-old black male on the porch with a gun to his head,” Webster said. “After attempting to convince the individual to drop the gun, [he] shot himself.”

Based on an immediate investigation, police determined the younger man shot the 30-year-old prior to turning the gun on himself. The two men were known to each other, Webster said.

Anyone with information regarding this incident should contact Detective Scott Samis of the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office at 1-800-533-7443 or Detective Steven Ramseur of the Asbury Park Police Department at 732-502-4587.
