'The man laid down on the tracks in front of the train and did not attempt to move'
A man was struck and fatally injured by a New Jersey Transit train in Asbury Park Tuesday, an official from New Jersey Transit has confirmed.
Train 2303, originating out of Hoboken and destined for Bayhead, struck the man around 4 p.m. near the Sixth Avenue crossing, according to John Durso, Jr., a spokesperson for New Jersey Transit.
“According to eyewitness accounts, the man laid down on the tracks in front of the train and did not attempt to move,” said Durso.
Service was temporarily suspended between Asbury Park and Bayhead, but has since resumed with residual delays, he said.
There were five passengers and two crew members aboard the train at the time of the incident, he said. No injuries were reported by anyone on the train.
New Jersey Transit Police responded to the scene and are leading the investigation, he said.
