Man who posed as police, injured Asbury cops indicted
Charges stem from a July 16 incident
An Edgewater man who allegedly injured two Asbury Park police officers as he brandished a handgun and posed as an officer himself was indicted by a A Monmouth County grand jury Wednesday.
The court returned a seven-count indictment charging Anthony Kennedy, 26, with impersonating a police officer, aggravated assault and several weapons offenses, according to court documents.
At approximately 10 p.m. on July 16, Asbury Park police responded to an incident where a man, later identified as Kennedy, allegedly claimed he was a police officer and threatened another person at gunpoint before driving away in a Volkswagen.
Police tracked down the Volkswagen in the 400 block of Ridge Avenue and Kennedy allegedly sped away. After police cornered the vehicle in a dead end street just off Fourth Avenue Kennedy got out of the car and fled from the scene on foot, police said in July.
Kennedy injured two officers when he resisted their attempts to take him into custody, police said.
A handgun was allegedly recovered at the scene of Kennedy’s arrest. The handgun turned out to be stolen, according to court documents.
Kennedy was indicted on charges of second-degree unlawful possession of a weapon, second-degree possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, fourth-degree aggravated assault by pointing a firearm, fourth-degree impersonating a law enforcement officer, second-degree eluding, and two counts of third-degree receiving stolen property.
He was taken to Monmouth County Correctional Institution where he is being held on $357,500 bail.
