Editor, the Asbury Park Sun:
Let’s not forget that the revitalization of Asbury Park did not happen by accident.
The Asbury Park City Council, led by Kevin Sanders, John Loffredo and Ed Johnson, threw out the do-nothing developers and negotiated contracts that brought in new businesses and more tax revenue. Then they reinvested this money back into our city. Just look around — our new Senior Center, the downtown business district, dozens more police on our streets, and the list goes on and on.
Loffredo and Sanders are running on the Forward Asbury team with current Councilwoman Sue Henderson and two strong newcomers, Will Potter and Greg Hopson Sr. Our city sits at a crossroads. We can choose to continue down the road of progress or restore the culture of corruption and crime that once turned our city into a ghost town.
Duanne Small and The A-Team say they intend to crack down on cirme, but his rap sheet says otherwise. Small has been convicted of or pled guilty to theft, drug dealing, aggravated assault and escape from detention. You would think that these guys wouldn’t stand a chance, but they are organized and are using some questionable and possibly illegal methods to secure votes.
And there is another problem. A third slate of candidates called the One Asbury ticket is also running. They seem to have very little organization or support (except for Dan Jacobson) but it’s looking more and more like htey culd play the spoiler. In other words, they may take a few hundred votes away from the Forward Asbury ticket, resulting in a victory for The A-Team.
That would be the nightmare scenario that could send our city back to the dark ages of the 80s and 90s. I pray that does not happen.
