Maruca’s Tomato Pie Opens On Asbury Park Boardwalk
Maruca: Family's Signature Sauce Recipe Dates Back 80 years
Members of the Asbury Park Community turned out Thursday afternoon to support the grand opening of Maruca’s Tomato Pies on the Asbury Park boardwalk.
Expanding on the popularity of Maruca’s Tomato Pies on the Seaside Heights, local entrepreneur Sammy Boyd partnered with Domenic Maruca in launching Maruca’s of Asbury Park, located on the boardwalk at the Third Avenue entrance.
Among those in attendance was legendary Chamber of Commerce founding member Joan Flatley, for whom the Spirit of Asbury Park Award is named. Boyd is a past recipient of the accolade.
An Asbury Park native, Boyd is known for his real estate ventures as part of the Berkshire Hathaway team, as well as for producing charitable concerts at the Paramount, which brings a host of globally recognized performers to the local community.
Maruca’s famous 24-inch pies are topped with trademark cheese and a signature swirl of sauce that starts in the middle and works its way to the crust.
Maruca, who has been making pizzas for 50 years, said the family’s signature sauce recipe dates back 80 years.
Manager Stephani Schwartz said 100 percent of their 15 member boardwalk staff hails from Asbury Park or neighboring communities. Another four to five staff members work out of the Asbury Park Food Collective on Memorial Drive, the cooperative commissary launched in 2017 through a partnership with MOGO Korean Fusion Taco owners.
Maruca’s Asbury Park’s menu features giant plain, pepperoni, sausage, and a topping of the day slices, as well as specialty pies. Topping options include extra cheese, fresh garlic, pepperoni, sausage, peppers, and onions. White and Margherita pies will be rolled out shortly.
Hours of operation are 10 am to midnight, Schwartz said.
“We want to be able to stay open for the after-concert crowd,” she said.
And while there is no delivery service, you can call in an order for pickup via 732-361-8551. Slices are $4.50, $5.50 with topping(s). Pies are $30, $4 for toppings, and $38 for the soon to come Margherita and White pie options.
