Max Weinberg donation launches online auction
Proceeds to benefit APMF support of musical programs for the city's youth
Max Weinberg’s generous donation to the Asbury Park Music Foundation [APMF] led to the launch of Thursday’s Charity Buzz online auction in support of youth music programs in the city, APMF Executive Director Matthew Hockenjos said.
The opening bid is $2,500 for this seven piece custom matte black with gold hardware DW Collector’s Series Drum Kit owned by the legendary drummer’s son Jay, 25, but its value is an estimated $10,000.
The younger Weinberg is played with the punk band the Reveling, Madball, and Against Me! prior to his run with heavy metal band Slipknot.
The donation is but one of a large array of drum equipment the elder Weinberg gifted to the local nonprofit that works to preserve Asbury Park’s rich musical history by focusing on its future.
Weinberg is most known as the as the longtime drummer in Bruce Springsteen’s E Street Band and as Conan O’Brien’s late night television show bandleader.
“He gave us a large amount of equipment,” Hokenjos said. “Some are really valuable.”
After reading an ad by the local nonprofit placed a few month ato, the ‘Minister of the Beat’ contacted the Foundation and a relationship grew, Hokenjos said.
The current auction will run for 10 days at which time it will be replaced by another one-of-a-kind instrument in support of youth music program.
“We’ll allocate the money in few different ways,” Hockenjos said. “We’ll reallocate any funds raised to the Lake House Academy charter children’s music program, the Boys and Girls Club Hip Hop program, and the Asbury Park Summer Recreation Band Camp.”
Instrument from Weinberg’s collection also will be donated to children that are participants in APMF programs, as well to area schools, community centers, and programs like the –based Project Matters, he said.
Funds from the auction will be used to purchase needed instruments to support the aforementioned programs as well to support APMF’s move from Cookman Avenue into the Lake House building, currently under renovation.
“If we can’t find a need for the instrument, we will sell or liquidate the item to purchase new instruments,” Hockenjos said.
Used as a practice set by Jay Weinberg, the DW drum set includes a 9”x9” tom-tom, 10”x10” tom-tom, 12”x10” tom-tom, 16”x14” floor tom, 16”x14” floor tom, 24”x20” bass drums, and a matching 14”x6” snare drum. Stands and additional hardware are not included.
The lucky bidder also will receive a copy of the autographed letter of authenticity but Weinberg’s personal details have been redacted.
