Mayor John Moor To Moderate League Of Municipalities Panel
Environmental Justice in Planning & Zoning Talk addresses pollution, transportation, gentrification, open space & recreation
Asbury Park Mayor John Moor will moderate an Environmental Justice in Planning & Zoning panel during this week’s 102nd Annual League of Municipalities Conference in Atlantic City.
Running from Tuesday through Friday at Atlantic City Convention Center, Moor will lead Environmental Justice in Planning & Zoning session at 10:45 a.m. Wednesday.
“It is an honor to be selected,” Moor said. “This should be an interesting and spirited discussion.”
The panel consists of the city’s own Tracy Rogers, a member of the City’s Complete Streets Coalition; Melanie McDermott, a senior researcher at Sustainable Jersey; Nicky Sheats, director of The John S. Watson Institute for Public Policy at Thomas Edison State University; and Joe Thomas, the economic development representative at Camden’s Office of Economic Development and Planning.
On the agenda are discussions on how municipalities balance local development and business decisions in protection residents ‘whose voices are excluded and are therefore unable to protect themselves from negative consequences.’
The panel will address everything from proximity to pollution and lack of mobility options to gentrification and poor access to open space and recreation. Sustainable Jersey will offer how it is addressing the incorporation of equity into its work program.
In Asbury Park, the city has been recognized for its initiatives, including for its environmental and development initiatives.
Moor cited the completion of Springwood Avenue Park, current Brownfield assessment and remediation, workforce development and transportation assessment plans, as well as the current master plan reexamination as examples of the aforementioned.
“We were the first Jersey Shore community [the fourth in the state] to put in a bike sharing program,” Moor said. “We have been addressing coastal resiliency on top of the impact of climate change, working to cut greenhouse gas emissions and to improve environmental equity.”
Also on the local discussion table is the City’s vetting of inclusionary zoning, an affordable housing tool that incorporates affordable housing into the production of market rate housing development, Moor said.
