MLK’s daughter to keynote school district’s annual Black History Extravaganza
Event begins 5:30 p.m Feb. 17 at Paramount
The Asbury Park School District has announced Dr. Bernice King, the youngest child of civil rights leader Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Coretta Scott King, will be this year’s Black History Month Extravaganza’s keynote speaker.
The free event will be held 5:30 p.m. Feb. 17 at the Paramount Theatre along the Asbury Park boardwalk at 1300 Ocean Avenue. Doors will open at 5 p.m.
King, an ordained minister and attorney, is the Chief Executive Officer of The King Center, founded by her mother in 1968. She began her oratory career at age of 17 when she spoke in her mother’s stead at the United Nations.
She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology from Spelman College, a Masters of Divinity and Doctorate of Law Degrees from Emory University, and an honorary Doctorate of Divinity degree from Wesley College.
She founded ‘Be A King’ with a focus on inspiring individuals to “Think, Act, Live, and Lead,” according to her website.
During the event King will sign copies of her book, “Hard Questions, Heart Answers,” a collection of her sermons and speeches first published in 1996 by Harmony.
The annual Black History Month celebration features 100 Voices of Asbury Park, a choir comprised of the school district’s educators and students, as well as performance by students from all five district schools and several community groups.
