Mother Ocean Opens Saturday At The Starving Artist
Asbury Park's Maggie Brown To Donate Portion Of Sustainable Art Sales To Clean Water Action
Local artist Maggie Brown will debut her new collection: Mother Ocean, Saturday at The Starving Artist at Days Restaurant in Ocean Grove.
A departure from her more industrial textured compilations inspired by landscapes, rocks, maps, and topography, Brown’s new series is an homage to her Jersey Shore roots and the area’s most precious resource.
A part of the Asbury Park art scene for seven years, the Ocean Township native is known for her sustainable art, which uses found items that would most likely end up in the landfill as part of her medium.
“There is just so much waste,” she said. “I try to take a step back and make my footprint smaller. When I come across and interesting piece of fabric or plaster, I reuse it as the texture.”
And whether Brown’s backdrop is wood, canvas, or a shutter, her compositions are inspired by the organic forms of nature. She uses the found materials to create the layered textures used to capture her depictions of renewal and decay.
Brown obtained a BA in Studio Art from Marymount Manhattan College in 2009. Brown is also cofounder of Babes in Business, the empowering network that brings thousands of women together via an online portal and meetups. She launched the venture in October with The Helpful Rabbit founder Jennifer Chavez and fine art photographer and Brinn bags founder Ciara Perrone.
The Mother Ocean opening reception will be from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, with the exhibit running through summer’s end. The opening will feature a performance by husband Chris Brown, a singer-songwriter and guitarist known for his folk-punk sound.
The event also serves as a benefit event in support of Clean Water Action, with a portion of the proceeds from Brown’s sales being donated to the environmental support advocacy nonprofit. The Starving Artist will also contribute a portion of sales during the event to the cause.
The Starving Artist is located at 47 Olin St. For more information about this event call 732-988-1007. Visit the artist’s website at maggiebrownart.com. To learn more about Clean Water Action visit cleanwateraction.org.
