Move For Hunger Food Drives
Jack Green Realty & Ganguly's Mixed Martial Arts hosts collections
Move For Hunger has partnered with two area business to help collect non perishable items in support of local food pantries. The moving company is sponsoring collections at Jack Green Realty of Ocean Grove and Ganguly’s Mixed Martial Arts of Ocean Township.
Move For Hunger is a national nonprofit based in Asbury Park that mobilizes the relocation industry to fight hunger and reduce food waste.
The nonprofit grew out of founder Adam Lowy’s family-owned moving company, started by his great-grandfather over 90 years ago. Instead of just moving boxes and furniture, Lowy saw an opportunity to collect and transport unwanted food that would otherwise be discarded.
The local company works with moving service providers across the nation to collect unopened, nonperishable food from people who are relocating and deliver them local food banks. To date, their network has collected over 7 million pounds of food.
For the fifth consecutive year, Ganguly’s Mixed Martial Arts is hosting the nonprofit’s Knock Out Hunger food drive through month’s end. The Jack Green Realty collection will run from Sept 12 through 23.
According to Move For Hunger organizers, there are over 1 million people in New Jersey, including 1 in six children, who face hunger. In Monmouth and Ocean counties, the figure is at nearly 120,000 people.
“We are trying to get as many people as possible to participate and help the community fight food insecurity,” spokesman Daniel Beam said.
Ganguly’s Mixed Martial Arts is located at 865 West Park Ave inside Ocean Township’s Cobblestone Village and Jack Greene Realty is located at 72 Main Ave in Ocean Grove.
Next month, Move For Hunger will participate in the Seventh Annual Foodstock picnic and food drive being held from 1 to 7 p.m. at the Freehold Independent Firehouse #1, located on Stillwells Corner Road. While there is no cost to enter the picnic, attendees are being asked to bring 25 pounds of nonperishable food to help reach the 60,000 pound collection goal.
