sharpton-SFIThe Asbury Park chapter of the National Action Network is sponsoring a Unity Rally on Main Street and a United Gospel Festival at the Paramount Theatre Saturday, Oct. 11, with Rev. Al Sharpton as the gospel show’s keynote speaker.

The Unity Rally starts at 1 p.m. in Bradley Park, located on the block west of Convention Hall. It is being held in memory of the late Trayvon Martin, Eric Garner and Michael Brown, whose deaths have sparked national debate and controversy about race and racial issues as they stand in America.

“The rally is in memory of  Trayvon Martin, Eric Garner and Michael Brown,” said Duanne Small, president of the action network’s Asbury Park chapter and current Asbury Park City Council candidate. “We want to keep the focus on the issue of police brutality in our community — that is why we are having this rally, to inform the public of their rights when it comes to dealing with the police, and to develop a better relationship between law enforcement and the community.”

The keynote speaker of the Unity Rally is NAN New Jersey President Rev. Steffie Bartley.

Following the rally, a “United Gospel Fest” will be held at the Paramount Theatre, with National Action Network founder Rev. Al Sharpton as keynote speaker.
“We wanted to have a gospel fest so we can bring out the church community and develop a more cohesive relationship with the community,” Small said.

The free gospel show features Theresa Thomason, Wings Of Joy, Su Su Bobien, Minister Calvin Berry and Heart of Worship, The Graham Family Singers, The Anointed Sons of New Jersey and many more. Special guests include Rev. Prophet Kevin Nunn and the Spirit of Truth Choir, Victory Taberbacle Choir and others.

Event hosts are Minister Sylvia Coleman, Tyron McCallister and “Discyple”.

Doors open at 3 p.m. and the show starts at 4 p.m.

The Paramount Theatre is located at 1200 Ocean Ave.

[UPDATE: The rally was originally scheduled to take place at Fifth and Main Streets, but has since been moved to Bradley Park, according to Tom Gilmour, the city’s director of commerce and economic development.]

[RETRACTION: Gospel singer Queeni, who was billed as an event host, contacted the Sun to ask that her name be removed from the list of event hosts as Asbury Park NAN “never contacted or contracted” her to be one of the hosts of the event,” she said in an email to the Sun.]
