Neptune City Man Sentenced To 34 Years For 2012 Shooting Outside Cameo Bar
Berry, 24, must serve 85 percent of sentence and 5 years of parole supervision upon release
A Neptune City man was sentenced to 34 years for the 2012 attempted murder of two men outside the then popular Cameo Bar on Main Street in Asbury Park, Prosecutor Christopher J. Gramiccioni announced in a written news statement.
Tyrice L. Berry, 24, was given the maximum custodial sentence of 24 years for his October conviction of first degree attempted murder charge before Ocean County Superior Court Judge Rochelle Gizinski. He was also given a consecutive three-year sentence and eight years for the second degree possession of a weapon for unlawful purpose charge.
In total Berry was found guilty of two counts of attempted murder, aggravated assault, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, and possession of a handgun without a permit.
The charges and conviction stem from a joint investigation by the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office and Asbury Park Police Department in connection with the October 19, 2012, shooting incident.
Asbury Park patrol officers were in the area of Main Street and Sunset Avenue at approximately 1:23 a.m., when they heard and responded to shots fired outside of the Cameo Bar, officials said. Upon arrival, police identified a 30-year-old and 28-year-old male had sustained multiple gunshot wounds. Both men were transported to Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune Township, where they received treatment.
The joint investigation determined the victims were seated in a parked vehicle when they were fired upon by two individuals, one of whom was identified as Berry, officials said. A forensic report revealed key pieces of evidence that was later linked to the defendant.
Berry’s sentence includes provisions outlined in the No Early Release Act, requiring him to serve 85 percent of the prison term imposed before becoming eligible for release on parole, officials said. A mandatory five-year parole supervision is attached to his prison release.
The case was prosecuted by Monmouth County Assistant Prosecutor Diane Aifer, and Berry was represented by Melissa Barbier of Toms River.
