New food truck location gets positive reception
'this shows compromise, this shows team work, this shows collaboration'
A revised proposal to move a food truck court further north up the Asbury boardwalk got a positive reception at Monday’s city council workshop meeting.
Boardwalk redeveloper Madison Marquette had originally proposed a location just north of the Sunset Avenue pavilion, between the Berkeley Oceanfront Hotel and the North Beach condominiums. Some nearby residents had expressed opposition to that location.
The new location [above] will move the food truck court up the boardwalk to an open green space area just north of the Ocean and Seventh Avenue roundabout.
Residents living in the nearby area who attended the meeting expressed support for the revised plan.
“I am so pleased about how this food truck thing has been resolved and it has been resolved,” said North Beach resident Nita Congress. “What I’ve seen over the course of this issue is that people have come in with widely divergent opinions and compromises were reached. I think this shows compromise, this shows team work, this shows collaboration, this shows a lot of thing I haven’t really seen in Asbury or in life really.”
The proposal will position six food trucks inside a landscaped perimeter north of the North Beach condominiums. String lights, picnic tables, umbrellas, bike racks and a game area designed to accommodate passive recreational games like bocce, horseshoe or corn hole accent the space.
The Council can vote formally on the proposal at Wednesday night’s council meeting. The Planning Board must also approve the proposal.
Carrie Turner, Madison Marquette’s director of retail said the new bathrooms added to the area last year will serve the food truck court patrons and beachgoers.
The redeveloper also agreed to add electricity and hosed running water to the site, doing away with the need for generators. They also agreed to keep the hours of operation from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.
If the council and Planning Board approve the plan at their next meetings, the food truck court could open in time for the summer season, Turner said.
