New Year’s Eve Celebrated At Historic Convention Hall
Hopes For 2018 Include Health, Happiness, World Peace, and Consistency
They came from a few blocks away and from across the state and beyond, donning their best disco era garb, to ring in the New Year at Convention Hall.
“We came last year and had a really great time,” said Scott Pierson and Chelsea McMaster of Piscataway, who are wishing, respectively, for world peace and happiness in 2018.
Jackson residents Cynthia and George Shashaty brought their Staten Island friends Diane and Joe Scalia to support [their son] Christopher and Sarah Shashaty of Asbury Park, who operate Topshop Photo Booth in Convention Hall.
And since Jan. 1 marks Joe Scalia’s first day of retirement he wished “to be successful of in my retirement and enjoy the rest of my life like there is no tomorrow.”
The Shashaty said they hoped not to work as hard as they did in 2017 and Diane Scalia hoped to be healthy and happy in the new year.
Among the favored garbs were the homages to John Travolta’s polyester white suit in Saturday Night Fever and classic jumpsuits for women. Gold sequences and wild patterned shirts and suits were also a favored option.
Hip Hop dancer and teacher Jessica Totero of Asbury Park brought a Hoboken friend to enjoy the festivities. Her resolution was to be more authentic in the new year.
Denville residents Lauren Gonzalez and Daniel Binazeski said they learned of the celebration from friends.
“We really liked it,” Lauren Gonzalez said. “It went really quick.”
The engaged couple who are getting married in September said they were hoping everything would go smoothly.
The Studio 54 themed event offered not only passed hors d’oeuvres but food stations, an open bar, and the Champagne toast. DJs Atom Worth, Foggy Notion and Mike Merrell spun the best disco sounds of the 70s, as well as today’s club hip hop and techno offerings.
And then there was Bernard Gardner of Peapack-Gladstone who took the opportunity to revisit his 1970s afro.
“The wife and friends elected to come here,” he said of spending the holiday across the state. “I thought it was it was outstanding; a lot of energy. The 70s throwback was wonderful. It was a beautiful experience.”
The retired military service member said his new year’s wish it to stay consistent.
