The Forth Union Skate and Culture organization kicks off a new initiative that centers around girl power Thursday evening.
Presented by Girls Riders Organization [GRO] the inaugural Girls Only skate event will be held from 5:30 to 7: 30 p.m. in the Carousel, located at Asbury and Ocean avenues.
During the first few weeks of operation, Forth Union staff noticed that females were underrepresented among the many eager participants skating the bowl, AP Boardwalk spokesman Adam Nelson said. “Through a network of skateboarders in support of the project, Forth Union was introduced to GRO founders, who responded enthusiastically about sharing their knowledge and model for increasing female participation in action sports.”
The event is also supported by Pink Pineapple Surf, a surf school exclusively for girls that is based in Manasquan.
Nelson said all ages and abilities are welcome and a limited number of boards and helmets will be available for girls who don’t already have them.
Forth Union will also host a Mercyful Skate event this weekend in celebration of Halloween.
Best Costume and Best trick prizes are a part of the 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Groms timeslot and the 1:30 to 8 p.m. Adult Skate on Saturday.
Forth Union is open from 2 to 10 p.m. Fridays, 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturdays, and 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sundays. A Groms only skate is reserved for 10 a.m. to noon Saturdays and Sundays. Daily passes are $5 and $30 monthly passes are available.
