Child crashes car and burglary string suspect caught
A 41-year-old township man was charged Monday with child endangerment after his 4-year-old son crashed his car into a building on Rustic Drive, Det. Lt. Kevin L. Faller said in a news release.
An investigation led by PO Alisa Martinez and Det. Michael Melody revealed the township resident left his two children, the 4-year-old boy and a 2-year-old girl unattended in his running car near 10:27 a.m. Monday. The 4-year-old climbed into the driver’s seat and put the car in reverse. The car struck a brick stairway wall but neither child was injured.
During the arrest, officials learned the father had an active contempt of court warrant from Asbury Park. The children were released to into their mother’s care after the New Jersey Dept. of Child Protection and Permanency was notified.
A Monday evening fire at a Twinbrook Village apartment complex was the result of a maintenance workers attempt to defrost frozen copper pipes with a propane torch, officials said.
The fire broke out inside the walls of an upper and lower apartment on Armstrong Blvd. near 4:55 p.m. All residents were immediately evacuated and no injuries were reported. Two apartments were deemed uninhabitable.
Ocean Township Police, Oakhurst Fire Department, and EMS all responded.
And on Feb. 11, Police charged a 19-year-old township man with six counts of burglary in connection with a string of burglaries in the area.
The man was apprehended during Detectives Jeffrey Malone and Jesse Orbach’s investigation into a Highwood Road burglary.
The detectives were canvassing the area when they encountered the township resident. He fled on foot but after police set up a perimeter detail he was located.
Their investigation uncovered a New York fugitive warrant and led to charges for a string of burglaries in the Oakhurst section in November. During one of the burglaries video surveillance captured what is believed to be the suspect riding a bicycle with a stolen purse.
The 19-year-old was charged with 6 counts of car burglary, theft, obstruction of the administration of the law, possession of under 50 grams of marijuana, tampering with evidence, and being a fugitive. He was remanded to the Monmouth County Jail in lieu of $162,500 bail. He was not charged in connection to the initial Highwood Road burglary.
