Welcome to the first edition of Friday Foto, a weekly photographic journey through the greater Asbury Park area, curated by Asbury Park Sun creative director Jason Thomson and featuring local photographers.
This week’s photo comes from Ocean Grove resident Chris Spiegel. It’s a shot of The Great Auditorium during a lightning storm, featuring an eerie purple sky combined with bolts of lightning in the background and a brightly glowing cross on the Ocean Grove landmark.
“The night that picture was taken, there was a thunderstorm for like 5 hours straight with some of the most consistent lightning I’ve ever seen,” Spiegel said. “I was out shooting all night and got a time-lapse of the storm as it was passing over Asbury Park from the Ocean Grove side of Wesley Lake.”

“At this point it was absolutely pouring,” he continued. “I got the idea to try and capture a lightning bolt behind the auditorium since it’s the closest point of interest to my house. I tried shooting under the gazebo, but I wasn’t able to get the angle I wanted, so I threw all caution to the wind and propped up my tripod right in the middle of the walkway, held my hat over my camera to keep it somewhat dry, and was able to get the shot.”
