Ocean Twp PD launches Holiday Traffic Safety Initiative
Motor vehicle violation crackdown runs through New Year's Day
The Ocean Township Police Department announced it has launched a Holiday Traffic Safety Initiative, department spokesman Det. Lt. Kevin Faller said.
“The goal of this initiative will be to target vehicle operations where the operator’s actions are aggressive, distracted, or impaired,” Faller said in a written news release. “With the hustle and bustle of the holiday season we see increases in traffic volume and crashes related to unsafe vehicle operations.”
The crackdown is being handled by the Department’s Patrol Bureau and Traffic Bureau, who will target all visible motor vehicle violations. Faller said particular attention will be paid to hazardous moving violations in traffic and hazardous intersections and roadways within the township.
Traffic stops will not only include DWI suspected offenses but also vehicle equipment violations and the unlawful use of cellular telephones while driving.
“This initiative is to include zero tolerance for distracted driving related offenses by operators of a moving vehicles using cell phones or similar electronic devices,” Faller said. “[It] will also support the ‘2015 Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over’ year-end crackdown campaign.”
The Holiday Traffic Safety Initiative will run through January 1, 2016, Faller said.
Last year the initiative garnered 459 motor vehicle violations, Traffic Safety Officer Alisa Antunez said. They included 52 careless driving summonses, 8 DWI violations, 19 cellphone use tickets, 6 reckless driving charges.
“We are really going after aggressive drivers,” Antunez said.
