Oceans Family Success Center Launches Programing
Calendar of events includes family, parenting and youth initiatives and support groups
In just two months since opening it doors on Springwood Avenue [next door to Kula Café], The Oceans Family Success Center has organized a full calendar of events in support of the community.
Made possible through Hunterdon Prevention Resources and the NJ Division of Family and Community Partnerships [FCP], the center offers family/parenting programs, youth initiatives, and works with a network of agencies to help those in need of everything from housing and job resources to food assistance.
Below is a list of events:
• The Baby Bunch – Mom and children ages 1-3 get together in a fun, safe environment for play dates. The Moms meet and form bonds while the children play and develop healthy social interactions.
• Boys2Men – is an opportunity for middle and high school boys to be mentored by adult males. Men over 21 years old interested in mentoring and being a positive role model can contact Executive Director Linda A. Rossi at 732-455-5272.
• The Father Factor – is a support group for single and partnered fathers to support and educate each other. Topics of discussion will be lead by the group.
• Milestone Moms – is a support group for mothers who are done having children and are now considering their next steps. Topics will include reentering the workforce, volunteering, and more. depending on the interests of the group.
• Mommy & Me – is a support group for moms with preschool children [ages 3-4] to meet, bond and support each other.
• The Stork Club – is a support group for expecting or first time mothers who want to know what to expect while expecting and how to handle the baby’s first year of life.
• Strengthening the Family [SFP] – is a program for families that meets once a week for six weeks. SFP provides behavior-shaping techniques to increase communication skills and enhance family bonding for a more positive home environment.
• Homework Help – Certified teachers, interns and volunteers assist students from 3 to 5 p.m. every Monday and Thursday. Registration is required in order to ensure a child’s needs are met. A snack and beverage is provided, as well as game playing once homework in complete. Community Outreach Partner Phyllis Ledbetter is available to organize one-on-one mentoring if a child requires help in a specific subject.
• Neighborhood teens are invited to participate in Open Mic Time, being held 3 to 5 p.m. Feb 3, at the Ocean’s Family Success Center. Students are encouraged to voice opinions through the medium of their choice – Art, Comedy, Music-Instrumental, Dance, Music-Rap, Poetry Music-Song, and Storytelling. Registration is required and performers must be between the ages of 13-19. Each performers will get a 10-15 minutes set depending on the number of acts registered. Refreshments will be served.
• Children’s Art Class – The Hearts in History is a program aimed at remembering great figures in American History through collaborative art projects. Children, Tweens and Teens, ages 6 to 17, and interested adults and parents are welcome to join the 1 to 4 p.m. Jan. 21 workshop.
The Oceans Family Success Center is located at 1201 Springwood Ave, Unit 105. Its hours of operation are: 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday, 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, 11:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday.
