Painting his way across America
Renowned British painter launches charitable art tour in Asbury Park
For the next 24 days, British painter Glyn Macey will travel from coast-to-coast painting 100 American landscapes for charity. He has 99 to go, as he already painted his first on the north Asbury Park boardwalk Monday.
For the charity tour, “USA for UNICEF” Macey will drive roughly 3,000 miles over 12 states, stopping in several US cities, including New York, Pittsburgh, Pa., Indianapolis, Ia., St. Louis, Mo., and Santa Barbara, Calif., where he will paint three to four landscapes per day and sell them at auction on eBay.
All of the sales proceeds of his 100 original studies in support of UNICEF, the United Nations’ children’s organization.
“As long as I’ve got Wi-Fi every night, I’ll be posting photos of [the paintings] on the site,” he said.
The first is an Asbury Park beachfront scene, a fitting start as Macey sees it.
“Because the other side of the Atlantic is where I live, so it is a really great link to start out with,” Macey said after he finished the painting.
The artist, who specializes in mixed-media paintings, had added sand from the beach for texture.
Over the past four years, Macey has raised more than $65,000 for noteworthy organizations. Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) and National Trust are two of the organizations he recently supported. For the RNLI, Macey traveled along the coastline of England painting landscapes, donating the funds to help employ 100 new beach lifeguards, he said.
He hopes to raise at least $20,000 for UNICEF, he said.
Macey launched the tour at The Collective Art Tank.
His tour is sponsored by Liquitex, an industry-leading acrylic-based paint supplier and co-sponsor of the Art Tank. The company will provide Macey with necessary art supplies throughout his journey along with a late model Hyundai emblazoned with his sponsors name and the hashtag “GlynPaintsTheStates ” [shown at right].
Liquitex and its sister brands Winsor & Newton and Conté à Paris, also sponsors of The Collective Art Tank, are dedicated to supporting the arts as an agent for social change, according to a company release.
“We are honored that Macey, a celebrated artist with international recognition, has chosen to kick-off his American tour at The Collective Art Tank,” said Jimmy Leslie, resident artist at Liquitex, Winsor & Newton and Conté à Paris, and director of The Fine Art Collective.
An arts education-driven cooperative, The Collective Art Tank offers professional artists and leading art educators a free space to work and teach classes. Additionally, art material brands Liquitex, Winsor & Newton and Conté à Paris, its sponsors, offer free ample products and supplies to working artists in the space.
