Parking limited at municipal parking lot
Construction planned for April 22-29 & May 12-22
Work on the municipal parking lot is begins today officials said.
Parking at the Main Street lot, located in front of the city hall, will be limited as milling and paving work begins.
“I want to apologize in advance for the inconvenience but I think everybody will agree that the paving of the municipal lot is way, way, overdue,” Acting City Manager Anthony Nuccio said.
The city-owned lot will be restriped to accommodate wider parking spaces and placed on the diagonal, Nuccio said. Parallel parking spots will also be added along the sidewalk in front of the building.
“It’s going to be a logistical nightmare but it’s got to be done,” Mayor John Moor said.
Moor said the project was timed to offset the busiest traffic times to town hall but there was no way to get around municipal court activity.
While no lighting or landscape improvements are a part of the project, Moor said money was saved by entering into an inter-local agreement with Monmouth County, who will be in charge of the construction.
The project construction dates are from April 22-29 as well as May 12-22.
The parking spots will be metered to allow for public parking, Nuccio said.
The city’s Parking Committee is looking at improvement to the city-owned transportation lot as well as the railroad parking lot, Moor said.
The committee, which makes recommendations to the City Council, is currently vetting a March parking study conducting by consultant Desman Associates.
While the parking study was met with controversy, improvements to the three city-owned lots were part of their recommendations.
