Poetry Crawl Launches Third Thursday In Asbury Park
Downtown Merchants’ Initiative Aims to Promote City’s Walkability
The third Thursday of the month is the new first Saturday, according to Asbury Park’s downtown merchants who are launching the monthly initiative on April 18 in conjunction with the Asbury Park Chamber of Commerce.
“This is the first of a new endeavor by the downtown merchants to encourage people to come into town during the week and [to give] retailers a reason to stay open late one day a week,” said ShowRoom cofounder Nancy Sabino.
Third Thursdays will launch with a poetry crawl, in honor of National Poetry Month. Readings will be held from 6 to 9 pm April 18 at various locations.
“This celebration of local poets will add a cultural aspect to this first, Third Thursday in the downtown,” Sabino said. “A different focus will be promoted each month as Third Thursday evolves.”
Participating venues include The ShowRoom Cinemas, Parlor Gallery, words! Bookstore, Heaven Gallery, Confections of a Rockstar, and Café Volan.
The featured poets include Jon Fischer, Jamie Cowling, Mychal Mills, Bob Evans, Meredith Avakian, Michael Thomas, Chris Bogart, Michelle Russo, and Cord Moreski.
“This is a reawakening of the city during the weeknights for guests from all over to check out the fine businesses and the ‘walkability’ of Asbury Park’s downtown culture,” Sabino said.
A schedule of poets and map will be distributed closer to the event date.
