Asbury Park Police Chief Mark Kinmon will retire from his position effective Sept.1, City Manager Jack Kelly has confirmed.

Kinmon notified the city of his intent to retire through an email sent last week.

“As discussed earlier this week, I have submitted my application for retirement to the NJ Division of Pensions. The effective date is September 1, 2014,” the email reads.

“The residents of our special community have been fortunate to have you as their police chief,” Kelly said in response. “I enjoyed your honest leadership, integrity and your outstanding work ethic.  You have my appreciation for your unselfish commitment to getting the job done, especially at times when as public officials we are the media’s highlight reel for the week.”

Kinmon has been in law enforcement for 27 years.

Originally from Howell, Kinmon joined the county sheriff’s department when he was 20 years old. After two years with the sheriff, he transferred to Asbury Park in March of 1990 as a patrol officer and became chief of police in March of 2007.

The decision to fill the post will be left up to city council, Kelly said.

The person with the next highest rank in the department is Deputy Chief Anthony Salerno, who was promoted to the position May 1.
