Police dept. upgrades to new computer system
County-wide software makes sharing, accessing reports easier
The Asbury Park Police Department is changing computer operating systems as part of a county-wide switch.
Officers will now be able to access the operating system from their cars, instead of having to return to police headquarters to file reports. They can also send reports directly to their supervisors without leaving their cars.
This means police officers can spend more time outside of police headquarters, increasing their visibility around town, Captain David Kelso said.
The department previously used a system known as XRMS. They switched to Spillman on Sept. 17. The department will continue to run XRMS for reports taken prior to Sept. 17.
Officers were trained in the new system in a series of classes over the summer, making this month’s transition relatively easy, Kelso said.
As the Spillman operating system is county-wide, the biggest effect of the switch is the ease with which police departments can now share information across Monmouth County.
“Anyone who works with the county system, all that information can be shared,” Kelso said. “Where before if we had an arrest and Neptune needed information, they’d have to call us. Now it’s all on one wider database.”
