A solemn air fell over the Asbury Park Police Department as the news that one of their own, Sgt Randall Hill died unexpectedly Monday.
“He had been out on medical leave but recently returned to duty,” police department spokesman Officer Michael Casey said.
In a written statement to the public, Acting Police Chief Anthony Salerno said, “Sgt. Hill was a great man and a great friend. He will be missed.”
“Sgt. Hill accomplished many things during his 20 year tenure with the Asbury Park Police Department.” Salerno said. “However, his proudest accomplishment was his relationship with his fellow officers, officers from other departments, and his relationship with the community.”
Through the years Hill served not only in the department’s Detective Bureau but also in its internal affairs, forensics, technical service, community police and partrol units, Casey said.
Hill honorably served his country as a member of the United States Army prior to becoming a Police Officer and continued as a member of the reserves even as he served as a police officer, Salerno said.
Councilwoman Yvonne Clayton said, “I want to express my deepest condolences on behalf of the City Council to the Asbury Park Police Department and Sgt. Hill’s family.”
Social media posts expressed great sadness for the veteran officer known for his smile and being a part of the city’s fabric.
The Monmouth County Police, Fire & EMS Facebook post read “Rest in peace Sgt. Randall Hill #83-107. Our thoughts & prayers are with your family, friends & the Asbury Park Police Department.”

Sgt. Hill is survived by his wife, two children and a grandchild, Casey said.
Services will be held Tuesday July 21 at St. Stephen AME Zion Church, 1001 Springwood Avenue. A viewing will be held from 9 to 10 a.m., followed by the funeral service at 10 a.m. Interment will be at the Brigadier General William C. Doyle Memorial Cemetery, 350 Province Line Rd. in Wrightstown.
