Quinn will seek reelection to Asbury Park City Council
Touts diversity of slate with incumbents Clayton and Chapman
Councilwoman Amy Quinn has made if official: She will seek reelection this November.
Quinn told the triCityNews newspaper that she was motivated by the opportunity to run with the two other incumbents up for election, Councilwomen Yvonne Clayton and Eileen Chapman.
“The idea of running with two smart, pragmatic and compassionate women is an opportunity I didn’t want to turn down,” said Quinn in an article to appear in the newspaper’s August 11 issue. The triCityNews owns this website.
While Clayton and Chapman have not yet made an official announcement, both had previously told the triCityNews that they were “inclined” to run. Quinn also expects them to stand for election, she said.
Quinn said that the diversity of the ticket represents Asbury Park — an African-American who lives on the West Side (Clayton), a member of the LGBT community (Quinn) and someone (Chapman) from “old Asbury,” the decades-long residents of the city.
As for the job itself, Quinn told the paper, “I like when people have ideas, whether a park on Springwood Avenue or a beach badge app, and I like being in a position to help those ideas come to fruition.”
Quinn, 39, was first elected to the Council in 2013, when the elections were still in May. After voters approved changes to the city’s governing charter, a new council including Quinn was elected in November, 2014. The three council seats up in this November’s election are all for four year terms.
The two other council seats are currently held by Mayor John Moor and Councilman Jess Kendle. Those two seats are up for election in 2018.
Asbury Park has non-partisan elections where candidates do not run under political party banners. Instead, they can group themselves into tickets or run on their own. All the candidates appear on the ballot in one column.
Quinn is an attorney specializing in housing discrimination cases. She moved to Asbury Park fifteen years ago. Quinn and her wife Heather Jensen have a ten month old son, Jensen Quinn.
